The process of searching for and purchasing goods and services over the internet by using a web browser is termed to as online shopping. The main fascination of online shopping is that consumers may find and purchase items they need (which are then delivered to their doorsteps) without ever needing to leave the house. Today, almost anything can be purchased through online shopping, amounting to billions of bucks a year in sales.

What is an e-Store?

Online Store:

An online store is a website that allows visitors to find, order and pay for products and services they are looking for. Running a successful store involves getting potential buyers to visit your e-store, helping them to understand their problem, giving evidence you can solve their problem, and making it easy for them to acquire the solution from you. It is hard to gain credibility. There are millions of e-stores operating online and offer a plethora of deals, bundle packages, discounts and much more to gain customer’s interest and trust. Therefore, you need to adopt smart ways and means to stand apart and reach up to the mark.

Online storefronts typically include storefronts, shopping carts, answer to your queries related to the products, payment processing, and order fulfillment systems. The basic process for running online stores includes promoting your products and services, gaining public interest, convincing your customers to place order and then final processing. There are different types of online stores, which include online mall, e-commerce hosts, e-commerce software applications or customized software programs.

The online storefront provides various types of information to the visitor such as company portrayal, product types, product description pages, and store policies, payment processing and contact information. A shopping cart allows customers to select and temporarily store products that they want to purchase. They can even remove or add in more products before placing order.

Payment processing is a system that allows the user to select which payment method they want to use, gather payment information (e.g. credit card number), and processes or records the payment information. Fulfillment is the process of picking or receiving the items the customer has ordered, shipping the item(s), and keeping up delivery-tracking information.

Who provides online shopping?

Mostly retail stores also have a website that allows their customers to buy from them online and either ship the items to their home or pick up at a nearby store location.  Plethoras of multinational companies offer online shopping facility to their customers worldwide. Some companies only sell products through their website and do not have a retail storefront. There are huge names like Amazon etc that are only web based and do not have physical stores.

What can I buy online?

You can purchase almost anything online; starting with groceries and greeting cards to cell phones and ringtones for the cell phones, clothing, shoes, bags, electronic gadgets, toys, books and the list goes on.  Almost everything can be purchased online. While most people still find it convenient to buy their groceries from the neighborhood shop, many people are purchasing rail and air tickets over the internet. In addition, people and corporate as well, are also purchasing a variety of services online. The best part about online shopping is that there are number of e-stores that even offer free shipping for local and nationwide customers. Sometimes they offer cash o delivery facility as well. This appeals more and more potential customers to shop since they find it alluring not to pay anything in the name of shipping charges.

How did online shopping start?

Online shopping became popular during the Internet boom in 1999-2000. Amazon.com, the online bookstore created history by becoming the first bookstore with a presence only on the Internet and no physical presence at all. Following the success of Amazon, many bookstores with a physical presence also created an online presence on the Internet. Later, renowned portals also started online shopping channels where people could buy more than just books.

Nowadays, online store, internet shopping, e-store etc is not something new to anyone at all. Anyone having a little knowledge about internet knows a bit about web based shopping and even avail benefits of e-shopping one way or the other.
