Heart Attacks in Pakistani Women - Women Health

 

Nowadays heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for women in Pakistan. Though it’s the disease of high socioeconomic group but lower groups can be affected due to poor nutrition.
According to the National Institutes of Health, women are more prone develop heart diseases than men.  Research shows that in women obesity, diabetes, smoking and high cholesterol levels are much more likely to have heart attacks.
Heart attack mostly affects older age group but not very much rare in younger women. After 75years of age it becomes more common among women than men. Young women are also prone to have heart attack, though the ratio is smaller but they have a second heart attack within one year.
The ratio of heart attacks in women to men or in older group to younger group is usually overlooked in Pakistan. Doctors does not consider heart attack as a cause of death in women.
The signs and symptoms of heart attack in women are bit different from men. Women usually experience extreme fatigue before having a heart attack.  The other most common warning sign is disturbed sleep.
Men usually experience chest pain as a warning sign of heart attack. But in women it is not a mentionable sign. If reported it is usually just feeling of pressure, aching, or tightness in the chest, but not the pain.
Other signs of heart attack in women are nausea, breathlessness, dizziness, generalized weakness of body, and fatigue. There are no classic symptoms of heart attack commonly known.
Reported study shows that signs and symptoms of heart attack in women are much different from men. These symptoms of heard attack are usually overlooked because of other conditions having similar symptoms. Studies revealed that women with the high heart rate at rest are more prone to have heart attack than women with the normal or low heart rate.
A research published in the American Heart Journal, that low LDL cholesterol and high HDL cholesterol can reduce the risk of heart attack in fatty women. In patients hospitalized for heart attack especially cholesterol levels is quite low especially the level of good cholesterol possibly due to high rates of obesity, insulin resistance and diabetes.
Women can help themselves in reducing the risk of heart attack even there is a diagnosed coronary heart disease or have a history of a previous heart attack. Women should follow medical advice to prevent or control your heart disease.
Lowering high blood pressure, controlling the level of cholesterol to normal, managing her diabetes, healthy weight and active life will help a woman to avoid the risk of heart attack.  Medications may be helpful to avoid or reduce the risk of a first or repeat heart attack. Heart disease is the number one cause of death in women in Pakistan but is also the most preventable disease and death can be prevented by proper medication. . Women should have knowledge of these symptoms and should ask immediate advice from a healthcare professional.
