Pregnancy induced hypertension is commonly seen in Pakistani women. In the medical term it is called as preeclampsia and if left untreated it will worsen up to eclampsia. High blood pressure with a high level of protein in the urine is the marked sign of this problem. There is swelling in the hands, feet and legs.

It is not important that the women having high blood pressure during pregnancy do have the problem of high blood pressure in normal life. It usually appears during the second trimester of pregnancy and generally aggravates in the latter part of the second or in the third trimesters, although it occur earlier in the first trimester.

If the early signs of the preeclempsia is overlooked and not managed properly then in the worsen stage, the eclampsia, women can often have seizures. This will leads to coma and even death of the mother and baby.

Pregnancy induced hypertension is much common in the poor socioeconomic group of the society. Poor nutrition with stress can be the cause of disease. Early and late age pregnancies are also more prone to develop the problem. History of high blood pressure in the normal life and also in subsequent pregnancies is also the reason for the pregnancy induced hypertension. Obesity and other diseases can also develop preeclampsia.

Swelling which settle after rest and having no other sign is not the preeclampsia. There should be protein in the urine in high content, rapid weight gain with accumulation of fluid in the body, abdominal pain and headache throughout the pregnancy. In sever cases dizziness and later leads to seizers.

Due to pregnancy induced hypertension blood supply to the fetus reduces and there are low birth weight babies. Premature birth is much common due to this disease.

Proper management of the disease can help in combating the aggressive symptoms. If diagnosed earlier it should not be ignored. If the symptoms aggravates then the only treatment is the delivery of the baby.

Mild sort of disease which is diagnosed after 20 weeks of pregnancy can be managed with careful hospital or in-home observation along with strict bed restriction. Woman who did not have hypertension before with a small amount of protein in the urine can have less problems throughout the pregnancy. Fluid intake in large amount is advice to such patients.

In case when the baby is preterm and symptoms of pregnancy induced hypertension appears doctor should advice bed rest, hospitalization, or medication to prolong the pregnancy and increase your unborn baby’s chances of survival. If the baby is near to birth then induction of labor is the only option to settle the problem. If the premature baby is delivered then there should be intensive hospital care for such babies.

If the symptoms of pregnancy induced hypertension are not settled and the time of delivery is late then only option is the induced option.
