Great Victory of Pakistan in 1992 World Cup Final

The 1992 world cup of cricket was held in Australia and New Zealand from 22 Feb to 25 March. The 1992 world cup was the first world cup won by Pakistan under the captaincy of Imran Khan. The nations which took part in this event were Pakistan, India, Australia, New Zealand, Srilanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, England and South Africa. The format of this event was round robin each in which all the teams will have to play against each other and then after there were to semi finals and then a final.

The squad of Pakistan in the 1992 world cup was Imran Khan(captain), Aamer Sohial, Aaqib Javed, Ijaz Ahmad, Moin Khan(wicketkeeper), Inzamam-ul-haq,  Iqbal Sikander, Javid Miandad, Mushtaq Ahmad, Ramiz Raja, Salim Malick, Waseem Akram , Waseem Haider and Zahid Fazul. The Pakistani captain Imran Khan promised the nation that he would come back with the 1992 world cup. Pakistan played their first match against West Indies in which they lost. Imran khan didn’t played in the first match. Ramiz Raja scored a fantastic 102 score.

The second match was played against Zimbabwe in which Pakistan easily won by 53 runs. Pakistan and England match gave no result. Pakistan played their fourth qualifying match against India in which Pakistan lost by 43 runs. Pakistan again lost the 5th match against South Africa by 20 runs. The sixth match was played against Australia which ended in the favor of Pakistan. It was the same famous match in which great Imran Khan told his team to fight like a ‘cornered tiger’. Pakistan faced Srilanka in their 7th and last qualifying encounter in which Pakistan won by 4 wickets.  This placed Pakistan on the 4thposition on the points table with 9 points and Pakistan qualified for the knockout stages.

Pakistan played the first semi final against the 1992 world cup favorites New Zealand and thrashed New Zealand out in a high scoring game and qualified for the 1992 world cup final for the first time. Inzi scored brilliant 60 from 37 balls and was named the man of the match in the first semi final. England qualified from the second semi final which was played against South Africa. The final between England and Pakistan was a classic match in the Pakistan which qualified for the first time for final in the history of cricket beat England by 22 runs. This allowed the Pakistani captain Imran Khan to lift the cup of 1992 world cup and registered his name as the first captain of Pakistan to lift the world cup. In this final Derek Pringle took two early on wickets and after that Imran Khan and Javed Miandad built a very important third wicket partnership and added 139 runs on the score board. Both started to score runs very slowly and one catch of Imran Khan was dropped.

After them Inzi and Waseem Akram batted very well and scored quickly and helped Pakistan to put a target of 249 runs and Pakistan lost 6 wickets. With ball Waseem Akram was on fire and he balled out  Allan Lamb and Neil Fairbrother on two successive deliveries and Imran Khan took the final wicket of the match. Waseem Akram was named man of the match and Imran Khan lifted the 1992 world cup trophy.
