History of Pakistan Hockey Team in Asia Cup Tournament

The history of Pakistan hockey team in Asia cup tournament begins with a 4 goals to 1 win against India in the inaugural Asia cup tournament in 1982 held in Karachi, Pakistan. Later Pakistan team achieved a hat trick performance by winning three Asia cup tournaments in a row in 1982 at Karachi, 1985 at Dhaka and in 1989 at New Delhi. It is an astonishing achievement for the Pakistan Hockey team to beat their arch rivals India in all the three editions of Asia cup to win the hat trick titles. In the 1985 edition of the Asia cup tournament Pakistan won the title by winning India with a score of 3 goals to 2. However Pakistan slipped down to sixth position after losing to China by 2 goals to 3 in the fifth and sixth position decider match in the Asia cup tournament held at Chennai, India in the year 2007. In 1989 Pakistan hockey team defeated India by 2 goals to nil in front of a packed stadium of aggressive audience at Shivaji stadium, Delhi.

Pakistan has a highly commendable winning streak of Asia cup Hockey tournament by winning 3 gold medals, 3 silver medals and one bronze medal. In the 1999 Asia cup hockey tournament Pakistan secured silver medal losing to South Korea in the finals by a goal score of 5 goals to 4. Pakistan team reached the semi final stage in the 2003 Asia cup tournament by beating India by 4 goals to 2 in the last league match. But Pakistan loses to India in the finals and took the silver medal. Pakistan routed their arch rivals India and defeated the hosts Malaysia in the semifinals in the 8th men’s Asia cup tournament in 2009 at Kuantan, Malaysia before they lost to South Korea in the finals by a solitary Korean goal which made Pakistan’s world cup spot difficult. Pakistan team was unfortunate to capitalize lot of goal scoring chances even though they played an exceptionally good game applying pressure on their opponent Korea team. Pakistan failed to convert the three penalty corner opportunities offered to them in the match. Both Pakistan and Korea were tied up without scoring a goal till half time. Pakistan team took the silver medal for the third time in the history of Pakistan’s Asia cup tournament victories. Pakistan climbed up by four steps from 6th to the 2nd position of the Asia cup ranking table.

Pakistan hockey team has recovered from their under performance in the 2009 Sultan Azlan Shah Cup Hockey Tournament; and with the new finds of young talents, Pakistan should be able to get 2010 world cup berth. After their last win in 1989 Asia cup tournament held at Delhi, India Pakistan has never won the Asia cup title.
