Sassi – Pannu Story in English:
Eternal love can be considered a love that cannot be defined or a love that’s everlasting. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” When Sassi, a beautiful girl abandoned by the Raja and adopted by a washerman and Pannu, a prince, were of age they met and married. They fell in love at first sight. They never imagined that their love story would form a part of a collection of popular romantic tragedies from Shan Jo Risalo. “Shan Jo Risalo is a poetic collection of famous Sindhi Sufi poet Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai.” Sassi Pannu is a famous folktale told in Sindh, Pakistan that embodies love, tragedy, deceit, and determination.
This recognized love story is about a woman named Sassi who endures quandaries while on a journey to find her husband Pannu. While on a mystical path, Pannu sets out on a quest to find God and though on his voyage he undergoes all kinds of tribulation. Being a descendant of royal blood, Pannu’s father and brothers were against his marriage to Sassi and her father was disheartened because he wanted her to marry a washerman and none other. On the eve of the second day of marriage, to Pannu’s surprise, his brothers were supporting his marriage while engaging and participating in the celebrations. Unbeknownst to him, they forced him to drink various wines and when he was intoxicated they returned him home to Kech.
The story ends by the lovers meeting their end. While infuriated with grief, Sassi sets out to Kech to find her husband. Along the way she encounters help from a shepherd and distress. She prayed to God for help and when answered the land trembled and divided. When Pannu awoke, he set out towards Bhambore in search of his wife. He comes across the same shepherd and the shepherd told Pannu the whole story. He prayed to God and when answered the land trembled and divided. They are both buried in the same valley of mountains. To which this graves still exists.
